Cholesterol
A study (Martinez et al., Alzheimer’s&Dementia, 04/13/22) with 180 individuals 60 or over found a reduction in risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in people with higher levels of HDL; high-density lipoprotein known as the “good” cholesterol. This small particles of HDL appear to improve the ability of brain cells to exchange lipids across the cell membrane, which is part of the cleansing process within neurons to get rid of built ip toxic materials which may play a role in death of the cell nucleus and development of the neurofibrillary plaques and tangles used in the diagnosis of AD. This also involves antinflammatory processes which may be neuroprotective.
